Storing recycled wood dry on an existing terminal

Shipit wanted to store and process recycled wood in dry conditions at the River Terminal in Wielsbeke. The challenge was considerable: building a cover with a large clear height and a 44-metre span, without major foundation work or changes to the existing concrete floor of the terminal. In other words: maximum scale, minimal impact on the infrastructure.

Our solution

High-quality cover on shipping containers, without foundations

Vermako developed a smart structure that uses shipping containers as the load-bearing base for the cover. This approach required no special foundations and left the existing concrete floor completely intact. The structure combines a clear height of 12 metres with an impressive span of 44 metres, so large volumes of wood can be stored and handled efficiently. A robust, scalable solution with minimal structural impact on the terminal.
